This week In lecture we talked about different search engines. We had to answer few question about search engines. We also learnt that there are two main Search Tools and they are : Search Engines and Directories which are both very useful. Directories are sites that have been edited. Many people edit the information for better quality and add more details to it to get a better response. we also got told about the problem we face using the search engines.

here are some example of search engines:

  • Google

  • yahoo

  • Hotmail

  • Ask

  • AOL

  • Altavista

  • Clusty

  • Hotbot

  • ...... and more

Directories are edited web pages that can be viewed and are usually good quality. Most of the directories can be reliable and trustworthy.

here are examples of directories

http://dmoz.org/

http://directory.google.com/

http://yahoo.com/

http://about.com/

Of the 9.4 billion searches performed:

– Google 57%

– Yahoo 23.7%

– Microsoft 10.3%

– Ask 4.7%

– Time Warner including AOL 4.5%.

The web was developed by Tim-Berners-lee in 1989 and the reason for creating it was to facilitate research information. The Web is a universe of accessible information stored on computers throughout the world. The information is available through a gigantic network called the Internet. During this lecture we also talked about the the development of Internet in the pass years.

During the lecture we also had to list a few Internet browsers which were

I First thought The martin Luther King website contained In formations about his history or biography of him. WEEK 3

Lecture Summary
In this lecture we discussed two different sections of being online and using the online library and online database. Online libraries are easily accessed though internet and it is accessible from different places for instant you can even access from your home. This method makes note taking simple and saves hours of our time however some online libraries are by subscription and it hard to finding them other then the ECU link. During this lecture we also got to know more about online databases I found that both are similar. This is very important and useful thought out university life which helps finding information easier and a lot more convenient.

Tutorial Summary
In our third week of this unit during the tutorial we were able to use the ECU online Library. It is very important to know how to use the online library. The provided services on the online library were a great way to gather information. We learned how to gather information from different sources that can be very useful for e.g. like books, Journal articles, Cd's and websites. Basically we logged on into
www.ecu.edu.au/library and went through the link and did a research on a particular topic which was about Global warming Impact on Business.

  • Go to http://www.ecu.edu.au/
  • Click On Library on the left side of the page
  • Then in the middle section of the page press on Journal Articles (databases)
  • From the options given click on Fund databases by title
  • On the right side of the page click on ABI/Inform Global (ProQuest)
  • Next step is to Type name of your topic on the first box, and click on the box that said full text documents only.
  • This time add another related topic in the second box and click on search
  • Click on the suitable article From the articles listed

Here is the article that I chose

During the TUT we also had to find 10 useful functions or tip for online library:

  1. Use the plus (+) and minus (-) signs in front of words and dont usespace between the sign and the keyword)
  2. Use double quotation marks (" ") around phrases to ensure they are searched exactly as is for
  3. Put your most important keywords first in the string
  4. Type keywords and phrases in lower case to find both lower and upper case versions. Typing capital letters will usually return only an exact match
  5. Use truncation (or stemming) and wildcards (e.g., *) to look for variations in spelling and word form.
  6. Combine phrases with keywords, using the double quotes and the plus (+) and/or minus (-) signs.
  7. When searching within a document for the location of your keyword(s), use the "find" command on that page.
  8. Know the default (basic) settings your search engine uses (OR or AND).
  9. Know whether or not the search engine you are using maintains a stop word list (see "Stop Words" Lesson 6.)
  10. In Boolean searches, always enclose OR statements in parentheses.

Reading 1 Summary

In this Summary we get the views of Bill Thompson on online search. Bill Thompson tells us that = a good online research has to include more then just typing couple of words into a search form. he also talks about how useful Google can be for doing a research and also to find out about Bill's reliability on Google for researching. this article just came show the impotence of online search using Google because there are allot of information that cant be found in the library therefor having an online search will help it also helps with in formations that are still haven't been thought library because its is allot faster on the Internet.

Reading 2 Summary

In this reading it simply gives us a few tips on how to have proper direction for a research with less time and effort. for e.g. using + and - to add or take word, use quotation Marks around the key word, use phrases use and or or and such things that can help us faster in researching.

WEEK 2

Lecture Summary
For the second week in this lecture we were told about the Microsoft application and had to list them dawn. We also had to list the internet browsers. We find out about the compatibility of this Microsoft on windows visa and an easy way to access softwares. Basically click on the start button and type name of the software in start search and enter. Also during this lecture we gained an understanding on how to use softwares like the Microsoft word, power point, and excel which will be needed and used in this course and throughout other units.

TUTORIAL Summary
This week during the TUT we leant more about Microsoft Word 2007 and Microsoft Excel 2007. Of course Microsoft applications are very important so we had to doing exercises to get familiar with some features of these softwares. After doing a word and an excel exercise we were able to use verity of features which is very useful in both softwares.

Here are some features that we had to do in the word exercise.

Line spacing
This feature basically used to leave space between each line. Can be required

Page break
Another useful feature is the page break which will be needed. Choose lines that needs to be transferred to another page then insert while pressed on page break.

Header and Footer
This is very important. To identify your work and your content you need to include header and footer.

Cover Page
All assessments must have the right cover page. You can choose the suitable cover page. The cover page will include:

  • Tutors name

  • The topic

  • Table of content

These are some exercises that help us learn learn about Microsoft Excel.

  • Creating a table with headings

  • Adjusting column width and row height

  • Adjust borders

  • Use colour to highlight some parts of the table
